Gates Mills, OH. – Double digit scoring from both Erica Emig (Junior) and Juliana Pollard (Freshman) guided the Hawks girls basketball to a 41-32 victory over Beachwood in home CVC action Wednesday, Dec. 5.
With the win tonight, Hawken improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. With the loss, the Bisons fall to 0-3 overall, with tonight's result being the team's first setback of the year in conference.

The first quarter was tightly contested with neither team holding a lead larger than four points. Both the Hawks and Bisons stayed in contention with solid shooting. The big difference in the game came in the second quarter when the Hawks outscored the Bisons 17 pts to 9 pts. “I think that the whole team went into the second quarter with a lot of energy and confidence.” Hawken coach Dave Murray said. “In terms of our offense, Beachwood switched to a zone defense which allowed us to get some good looks from outside. Julianna and Maya, who are both outstanding shooters, knocked down some clutch threes that gave us a huge boost.”

In the second half, the Hawks began to use their size to get an edge in the game. Hawken amassed a total of 46 rebounds. This rebounding resurgence was led by Makayla White (Freshman), who had 13 boards total. “Last night’s win was the result of a great team effort. I felt like, as a team, we collectively out-worked them which lead to a lot of offensive rebounds and winning 50-50 balls.” Murray said.

Emig led all players with 13 pts and Pollard led the team with 5 three pointers. Also putting in a stellar outing was Zee Johnson (Senior) with 6 assists to go with 2 pts. The Hawks will return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 8, with a home 2 p.m. bout against West Geauga.
