Pathways Program >
Become a Mentor
The Pathways Program is a purposeful and easy way to sustain
your involvement at Hawken. This is an opportunity to engage
our young graduates and students in creating their own unique
pathways.
With your involvement in the Hawken Pathways Program, you
are helping to expose our students and alumni to future
careers and current opportunities. As a career or college
mentor, you are agreeing to be available to our students
and alumni who may contact you via phone, letter, or email.
What does it take to be a career mentor?
Career Mentors share their experience with alumni who are
making a career change, just entering the job market, or are
interested in networking.
You should be willing to welcome conversations with alumni
regarding your career and offer advice for success in your
professional field. Additionally, you should expect to:
Inform students and alumni about the intricacies
of your field
Discuss the benefits, surprises and challenges
of a career in your field
Listen to concerns and answer questions
Share experiences and stories
Connect students and alumni with other appropriate contacts when possible
Listen to concerns and answer questions
Provide shadowing experiences, when available
You decide your own level of involvement.
Network with job seekers
Post job openings on the Career Center
Complete an online business card (Webcard)
Offer an interview or a job to a Hawken alum
Connect a Hawken alum with another employer
What is the commitment for an internship?
The Pathways Program strives to create the most beneficial
and realistic experience for students and alumni, and allow
them to gain professional skills. If you are providing an
internship, expect to:
Plan for the intern's arrival and provide instructions
Clearly define the expectations of hours, dates and appropriate attire
Prepare a training schedule
Establish regular meeting times to meet with the intern
Keep clerical work to a minimum
Define appropriate intern responsibilities and
clearly communicate them
Evaluate the intern and provide feedback to Hawken
What is a shadowing experience?
A shadowing experience is an investigative opportunity for
a student or alumni to experience your field on a smaller
scale. You would plan to mentor at your place of businees
for a half or full day, longer if appropriate. These experiences
should provide significant insight to your profession and
allow for a better understanding of your field.
