Interest Assessment
When choosing a field of interest, consider your abilities,
skills, natural interests, values and goals. The goal is
to discover where you are best able to express your natural
preferences. And while many students proceed to college
without a firm grasp or exposure to their ultimate occupation,
the Pathways Program is built around the belief that exposure
and experiential learning will only serve to enhance future
decision-making. The goal is self-discovery that seeks to
eliminate disciplines and career choices that are not good
matches as well as those that spark further interest.
Begin by creating a self-inventory of strengths/interests
that helps assess your likes and dislikes. There are several
online websites that will aid you in the personal assessment
process. Refer to the recommended O*Net website below.
Browse various jobs by reading briefs descriptions as well
as a list of knowledge, skills, abilities, interests and
values they typically require.
Discuss your findings with key adults, such as parents
or guardians and your faculty advisor at school.
Make a list of interest areas and search the Career Center
database
to determine if there is a potential match.
