Second Annual STEMM Symposium Showcases Student Research

On Thursday, December 9, members of the Hawken community gathered for the second annual Dr. Bob Maciunas STEMM Research Symposium, where they witnessed the powerful manifestation of Hawken's STEMM Pathways, a program of guided research in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine.

The evening marked the culmination of a three-part course spanning a year’s worth of study in Science Research I, II, and III. Throughout that sequence, students were guided through internships and research projects by mentors from the Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, the VA Hospital, Hillcrest Hospital, and NASA Glenn Research Center. At the symposium, 15 students presented their projects to attending guests who visited students’ stations to learn about their research findings. A panel of judges comprised of experts in various fields from CWRU, the Cleveland Clinic, and Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital were present to evaluate the projects.

During a formal presentation, Head of School Scott Looney welcomed the guests and Hawken Science Research instructors Nikolai Sopko, Ph.D. and Julia Samorezov, Ph.D. candidate, introduced the program. Three students - Anirudh Dasarathy ’12, Anthony Hsieh ’12, and Madeline Pesec ’12 - presented their research to the audience, after which Dr. Jacob Scott '94, former Hawken research instructor and current radiation oncology resident at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, offered a keynote address. Three students were then presented with award certificates at the conclusion of the program: Maddy Pesec '12 (first place), Eric Xiao '12 (second place) and Anthony Hsieh '12 (third place). Bob Shurtz, director of STEMM Pathways, offered closing remarks at the end of the symposium.
