Hawken Celebrates Opening of Stirn Hall

Hawken opened the doors to its spectacular new Upper School academic building center on Sunday, August 21, with a Grand Opening Open House that featured tours of the 115,000 square feet of new and renovated academic space and opportunities to speak with faculty, staff, and college counselors.

Attendees also enjoyed an outdoor festival on campus that included inflatables, faces painting, stilt walkers, a campus-wide scavenger hunt, and an opportunity to explore the outdoor challenge course.

Prior to the Grand Opening, Hawken families and friends gathered on the Great Lawn on Saturday evening to celebrate the new building and to reconnect prior to the start of school. There they enjoyed fireworks set against the backdrop of Stirn Hall, which glowed from within in anticipation of the long-awaited opening.

Described as an “architectural gem” by Plain Dealer reporter Steve Litt in a recent article, the new high school building was designed by the firm Westlake, Reed and Leskosky to accommodate Hawken’s forward-focused programming. Highlights of the new building include a cutting edge, two-story science center; an innovative two-story learning commons; a fabrication lab and media and communications lab that includes an editing suite, media lab, and media production studio; 37 new classrooms; a college counseling suite; dedicated writing and learning centers; and a student café.
