New Head Swim Coach Appointed

Following a national search for a new Head Coach and Aquatics Director, Hawken is happy to announce that Todd Clark has been selected to assume this position effective August 20, 2016.

A graduate of Kenyon College, Todd comes to Hawken with extensive experience and an impressive list of accomplishments in the aquatics field. In addition to having served as head coach of the men’s and women’s swim teams at Case Western Reserve University, where he generated a long list of team accolades, among them two NCAA Division III National Champions, Todd has also coached numerous other teams including the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins, the Pittsburgh Aquatic Club, the Pittsburgh Field Club, and the Kenyon College swim team. His long history of achievements includes serving as senior vice chairman of Allegheny Mountain swimming, head coach at AMS Olympic Training Center All Star Team Camp, 5-time United States Masters Swimming national champion, and 7-time NCAA Swimming All-American, to mention just a few. He has also been named North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and University Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

Todd brings with him extensive experience leading successful scholastics programs in the advancement of individual athletes and teams as a whole. In addition to having coached multiple All Americans, State Champions and State Record Holders, Todd has led high school athletes to twelve consecutive years of breaking varsity team records.

Self-described as “a value-driven leader committed to exemplifying and teaching integrity,” Todd is well-aligned with Hawken’s mission and values. Having been a scholar-athlete himself at Kenyon College, he fully appreciates the challenges, demands, and benefits of that dual role. The fact that both his men’s and women’s swim teams achieved the highest annual GPAs in all of college swimming during his tenure at CWRU underscores his commitment to student athletes. Moreover, he has worked hard to establish meaningful and long-term relationships with university coaches to help advance high school swimmers to college teams. Given his unmatched passion for competitive swimming, his experience with all aspects of training athletes, his record of success, and his dedication to the healthy development of young adults, he is clearly a wonderful fit for Hawken.

Described by Director of Athletics Jim Doyle as “an ideal fit for our swimming programs at Hawken,” Todd impressed the selection committee with “his accomplishments as a trainer of swimmers of all levels, his organizational leadership skills, and most importantly, his ability to connect with young people.” Veteran Hawken swim coach Jerry Holtrey adds, “Todd understands what it takes to develop champions. He understands all types of training from sprints to distance and all stroke training. He is the complete package.”

Todd will be working in collaboration with Jim Doyle and other members of the athletic department and is looking forward to building upon Hawken’s swim program and legacy of success as well as our commitment to excellence, scholar-athletes, and Fair Play. Welcome, Todd!
