Coach and Team Recognized at National Competition
Hawken participated in the National Academic Challenge Competition earlier this month and proudly won the title of the Winningest Junior National team history. Instructional Technologist Pat Jewell was awarded the title of Coach of the Year. “I am honored to be able to work with our Hawken students who have learned so much from their teachers and worked so hard in Academic Challenge,” says Jewell.
Hawken is one of only two teams in the nation to be invited and to attend all nine years of the tournament. Team leader Ian McDaniel '19 created a study guide to improve the team’s weakest topics. Hawken was able to sweep a category on one of those topics due to their diligence in studying and desire to improve each year.
Jewell worked with other coaches to form a new Ohio league for small schools such as Hawken. Several of the schools from the league attended national tournaments, including Wooster who came in first in the nation in Junior Nationals, and Westlake who came in fifth in the High School division.
“As Ohio coaches, we wanted to build our league so that students had the opportunity to have this fun, peer-group based activity,” says Jewell. “There are others who can share this honor of Coach of the Year, and I am genuinely grateful to receive it for all who have worked so hard for the students of northeast Ohio.”
