Fall Intensives Provide Inspirational Experiences

Hawken Upper School returned from Thanksgiving break for Fall Intensives – three weeks where students take one course, all day long.

Hawken School formulated and adopted Intensives for the Upper School in 2010. Now in its fifth year, the innovative format allows students to study a topic in-depth, to incorporate hands-on learning, and to take trips in Cleveland, other states, and abroad.

All areas of study are offered during Intensives, and one semester credit is earned upon course completion.

Science courses this fall include Chemistry; Chemistry Honors; AP Biology; Physics; and Marine Science Honors, which travels for two weeks of study at The Island School in The Bahamas. Readers at home can enjoy the Marine Science course by following a blog written by the students.

Humanities courses include US History: U.S. & the World; AP U.S. History, which travels to Charleston, SC; Cleveland in Action; and Leadership Through Diversity, which will travel to Indianapolis for The Student Diversity Leadership Conference. Numerous topics are offered for the Humanities 9 and Humanities 10 courses, and an English seminar class on Homelessness is based at The Gries Center, Hawken’s urban extension campus.

Students studying the arts are immersed in Graffiti Art; Filmmaking; Advanced Stagecraft; Drawing & Painting the Human Figure; and Music Playlist which is based at the Gries Center.

Other courses include a new course on App Development; the return of Game Theory & Probability; and French Immersion, a course that is traveling in France.
