Hawken Speech and Debate Wins Yale Invitational
Hawken's 2014-2015 debate season kicked off this weekend with a win at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, CT.
In Public Forum Debate:
- Aman Nair ‘15 and Jack Weisman ‘15 earned a 6-0 record in prelims and fought their way through elimination rounds to be crowned tournament champions out of the original field of 223 teams. In their undefeated performance, Aman and Jack also earned their first bid to the Tournament of Champions.
In Congressional Debate:
- Phillip Hedayatnia '16 advanced to the Semifinals Chamber and earned his second bid to the Tournament of Champions.
- Nayan Rao ‘17 advanced to the Semifinals Chamber and earned his first TOC bid.
In Lincoln Douglas Debate:
- Nicole Kastelic '16 advanced to the Octafinals round - just missing the bid in a close debate.
In Policy Debate:
- Noah Charnas ‘16 and Kevin Yu ‘17 advanced to the Quaterfinals round.

On Saturday night after preliminary rounds were complete, Hawken coaches Bob Shurtz and Chase Williams and the 15 members of the speech and debate team who traveled with us to New Haven joined Hawken alumni for dinner at Yorkside Pizza, a local hotspot. Arthur Erlendsson '13 (former Hawken Policy debater), Russell Cohen ’13 (former Hawken Lincoln Douglas debater), Margaret Erlendsdottir ’11 (former Hawken Extemporaneous speaker), Eric Xiao ’12, and Sydney Costantini '13 were all able to make some time to visit with our current students. Arthur was also gracious enough to spend most of his weekend judging Lincoln Douglas debate for Hawken at the tournament.
The debate team look forward to building upon this early season success throughout the year.
