Policies
Starting with preschool, students are encouraged to check out books during scheduled library times, during free times or before or after school. Students in grades PS - 1 may check out one book per visit, students in grades 2 - 3 may check out two books and students in grades 4 - 8 may use discretion in determining how many materials they can complete during a two week period. Students may come to the Library at any time between class visits to exchange books for new selections.
Children are responsible for all materials they check out. There are no fines. Children receive two overdue notices at weekly intervals at school, followed the third week by a notice and a postcard mailed home. If the book is still not returned, a bill for the replacement cost of the book will be sent. Middle School students with overdues and/or outstanding bills may not check out additional materials until these matters have been resolved.
Gift Book Program
Gift books are a meaningful way to recognize special occasions in your child's life and offer significant support to the Library. These are most frequently given at the time of a birthday but also may be given in honor of a teacher or a meaningful event in the life of your child. The cost is $15 per book.

Special Events
Each year under the management of parent volunteers, two books sales are held, one at Border's during November and the Scholastic Book Sale in the Library during February. Proceeds of these sales go directly to the Visiting Author Fund.
Through the Visiting Author program Hawken has hosted such notable writers and illustrators as Steven Kellogg, James Ransome, Karen Hesse, Gail Carson Levine, Margaret Peterson Haddix, Joseph Bruchac and Nikki Grimes.
