Hawken goes to great lengths to find the best teachers. It's why our interview process is such a rigorous one. First, prospective teachers are interviewed by Hawken's administration. Next, they are evaluated by Hawken teachers. Then they are asked to teach -- in a classroom, observed by their peers. Becoming a teacher at Hawken is not easy; however, Hawken does offer its teachers many advantages. Hawken commits over a quarter million dollars a year to teachers' professional development -- an extraordinary amount. These funds enable our teachers to pursue advanced degrees, to attend conferences and workshops, to travel abroad -- gaining knowledge and experience they can bring back to the classroom. Such support is a tremendous benefit to our teachers -- but even more so to those they teach.

 

Hawken School is an independent, college preparatory day school serving 950 students in grades Preschool through 12. Founded in 1915, its mission still reflects the words of James A. Hawken, "That the better self shall prevail, and each generation introduce its successor to a higher plane of life."
