Coeducation

Coeducation, the most basic form of diversity, is essential to a truly forward-focused, real world education.  Hawken School is committed to coeducation because we believe it is important to reflect the many kinds of diversity that exist in our world.

Because the real world is populated by both genders, we believe our classrooms should be as well.  Working collaboratively, Hawken students come to understand in a deep way that boys and girls are equal yet different; they experience daily how gender may affect one’s perspective, approach, or response.  This interaction not only prompts meaningful discussion and debate, but also exposes students to alternative methods of problem solving.

At Hawken, we believe that mixed gender education during these crucial developmental years impacts and enriches students’ intellectual, social and personal growth, giving them an advantage not only during their school years but throughout their lives.

The Case for Coed
When evaluating single-sex education, we must not ignore a crucial purpose of education — developing effective citizens. We need to consider the tradeoffs we may be making in sex-segregating students, closing off opportunities for learning from and with each other. — Susan McGee Bailey, executive director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women
