02/04/2010 - Junior Lindsay Kopit ’11 is scheduled to perform a Shakespearean monologue at Playhouse Square on February 27. If the judges favor her, she could be on her way to New York City to compete nationally.

Lindsay took first place in Hawken’s Shakespeare competition by performing one of Hermia’s monologues from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Fifteen other Hawken thespians took the stage in the competition as well, each memorizing and rehearsing their speeches individually and in small workshops facilitated by Humanities teacher Julia Griffin. They also participated in a workshop run by a professional actor/teacher from the Great Lakes Theatre Festival.

First runner-up of the Hawken competition was junior Jocelyn Adams, who performed Lady MacBeth’s sleepwalking scene. Second runner-up was sophomore Seth Mendel, who performed a speech from Much Ado About Nothing by the character Dogberry.

The competition is part of a national school-based program run by the English-Speaking Union of the United States. Students compete at school, branch, and national levels. The national champion will be the lucky recipient of a full tuition scholarship to the British American Drama Academy’s Midsummer Conservatory Program in Oxford, England.
