Recap: Alumni Weekend 2007

05/22/2007 - It was a weekend of old friends and "remember whens" as Hawken alumni met for the 2007 Alumni Weekend featuring the 50th class reunion for the Class of 1957 and a joint 25th class reunion for the Classes of 1981, 1982 and 1983.

On Friday, May 18, the Old Guard met at Bolton Hall on the Lyndhurst campus for lunch and a tour of the new Lincoln Hall. Later that day, classes from every Hawken era converged for a reception, with music for the evening provided by dance teacher Gary Darrow and the Middle School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of and accompanied by Hawken music teachers Ahren Stock and John Krol, respectively.

Presentation of the Holmes and Day Awards
Following the reception, the alumni gathered in the chapel for this year's presentation of the Carl N. Holmes Distinguished Alumnus and the Richard W. Day Alumnus Awards.

Charles P. Bolton '57 and George M. Humphrey II '57 were both the recipients of the Holmes Award, while Robert W. Anslow '77 received the Young Award.

Bolton is chairman of Brittany Stamping, a maker of metal stampings for the automotive and appliance industries. He is also the former director of the Ohio Department of Economics and Community Development's Office of International Trade and a former member of the Ohio Senate.

He has deep roots with Hawken; the School was built on land donated by his grandparents to James A. Hawken. He has served his alma mater generously in numerous roles and philanthropic capacities, including serving on the Board of Trustees in 1976 and also serving as chairman, president and vice president. He currently is a Hawken Life Trustee.

Active in the community, Bolton is a trustee of The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Musical Arts Association. He is a former board chairman of Case Western Reserve University and is a graduate of the Harvard College and
Harvard Business School.

Similar to his classmate and co-recipient of the Holmes Award, Humphrey has a longstanding tradition of service and philanthropy to Hawken School. He served as a trustee of the School from 1995 until 2006. Most recently, as honorary co-chair of the "Hawken Now!" Middle School Campaign, Humphrey led a successful multi-million dollar fundraising initiative to build the new Lincoln Hall at Hawken's Lyndhurst Campus.

He is the president of Extrudex Corporation and has improved the quality of life in Cleveland through his leadership of many nonprofit boards.

Through his 30 years of service to Cleveland Scholarship Programs, he promoted the idea that education and access to counseling can change lives. He has been a volunteer for United Way Services of Greater Cleveland since 1978. In the early 1990s, he chaired the most successful fund raising campaign in the history of University Hospitals Health System/University Hospitals of Cleveland. In addition, Humphrey has served as a trustee of The Hotchkiss School, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Museum of Art and Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Humphrey served in the United States Marine Corps and holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Michigan Law School.

Anslow, the recipient of the Day Award, is the founder of GlobeFlex Capital, a La Jolla, California, based investment manager. As chief investment officer, he invests in small and mid capitalization equities for institutional clients such as pension funds, endowments, foundations and family trusts. In addition, Anslow and partners of the firm have made a commitment to build a community center for Pokuase Village, Ghana, for Women's Trust, a micro-lending not-for-profit organization, which provides health care and scholarships, in addition to loans, to poor women.

He is a graduate of the University of the Pacific and a Wharton School Fellow, is a trustee of Scripps Birch Aquarium, San Diego Zoological Society, Rady Children's Hospital Circle of Care, St. Vincent DePaul Village, and Mission Hills Town Council. He took an active role in raising funds for Hawken's Holtrey Pool at Hawken's Gates Mills campus which opened in May of 2003; Anslow was the 1977 state champion in the 500 Freestyle.

Following the awards ceremony was a celebratory dinner.

Saturday: Family Picnic, Four-School Cocktail Party, Individual Class Parties
On Saturday, the day began with the Family Picnic at the Gates Mills Campus as alumni and their families soaked in the beauty of Upper School grounds. Art teachers Denise Buckley and George Roby presented a Raku Festival where families were able to fire and take home pieces of pottery they had painted earlier in the day. Children had their faces painted and rode in the Euclid Beach "Rocket Car." At the Lyndhurst Campus, 50 25th reunion Alumni played Battleball under the watchful eyes of Faculty Emeritus Len Carey, and Honorary Alumnus Jerry Holtrey and retired PE Teacher Dave Coad.

Later that night, Hawken hosted at Lincoln Hall the Four-School Cocktail Party with Hathaway Brown, Laurel and University School. Over 600 alumni attended the event in the new Lincoln Hall Middle School where Spanish teacher Chad Komocki and his band provided the entertainment. A caricature artist was on hand to sketch portraits of the reunion guests.

The individual Hawken classes ending in 2's and 7's then broke out after the party to celebrate their particular reunions at locations all throughout the Greater Cleveland area, capping a fun-filled, nostalgic weekend. The Class of 1957 50th Reunion Party was held in the Commons Room (Lyndhurst Library). Head of School Scott Looney handed out diplomas to the Alumni which were actually copies of their report cards from 1957. Special guests were Faculty Emeritus Charlie Poutasse, and James Hawken Smeed '43.
