Hawken students honored for service, scholarship

04/24/2007 - Junior Angela Primbas was recently named one of Ohio's Distinguished Finalists in the 2007 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. She was among only 10 other students in the state to receive recognition and was honored for her efforts to educate the public about Lake Erie pollution and the endangered Ohio brook trout. Prudential's program selects students in each state for their volunteerism.

In addition to the Spirit of Community Award, Angela also received the President's Volunteer Service Award, which salutes Americans who've given a considerable amount of their time to community service.

Wellesley Book Award
Junior Bryn Adams received the Wellesley Book Award for her stellar academic and extracurricular performance. Wellesley College, the award's sponsor, selects female high school students throughout the nation, who've "demonstrated excellence in the classroom and in personal achievements," said Dean of Admissions Jennifer C. Desjarlais.

"Young women should be chosen for their intelligence, determination, motivation and achievement," she said.

"They should be visible members of their schools and communities. Most importantly, however, they should be the academic leaders in their secondary schools."

Gay-Straight Alliance Founders Honored
Seniors Max Estrin, Hallie Noble and Alison Kopit were recently honored by the Gay, Straight and Lesbian Education Network (GLSEN) for being both founding and graduating members of Hawken's Gay-Straight Alliance.

GLSEN works to create safe schools for students across the country, regardless of their sexual orientation.
