Upper School Academics
We strive for a balance between the individual needs and interests of our students and the
traditional ideals of a liberal arts, college preparatory education. Therefore, Hawken's
graduation requirements include fundamental courses in English, science, history, languages,
mathematics, computer skills, fine arts, community service, and physical education.
At the same time, students have considerable opportunities to pursue particular interests
from an extensive list of electives. These courses range from Poetry Writing and Spanish
Literature to Qualitative Analysis and Advanced Technical Theater. With approval, students
may also participate in independent and off-campus study and travel options.
