The decision to name the stadium after Coach
Walton came at the request of the two leadership
donors as a tribute to his nearly three
decades of leadership on and off the field.
During his almost 30-year tenure, Walton has
coached 15 percent of Hawken's living alumni.
When the announcement was
made that the stadium would
bear the Walton name, the
student body, faculty, staff
and donors erupted in
applause, standing to
their feet.
Here's what people are saying about the new facility and this most fitting tribute. Send your thoughts to jburr@hawken.edu.
"If you listen to them and you hear their
stories, you will hear how much he helped them
become better people.
If there's a reoccurring theme in everything
that Mr. Walton does, it's that character matters,
integrity matters and that the adults in this
community are here to help students find that."
—Head of School Scott Looney
"For me, Coach Walton was emblematic
of what Hawken stood for. He is Hawken
School...As a teacher, as a coach, as a
friend, he's great."
— Eric Hamilton '82,
wide receiver, national champion
Penn State 1983 & 1984
"When I entered Hawken in Kindergarten, my first friend was Scott Walton. As such, I have gotten to know Mr. Walton over the years as a Hawken parent, father, coach, and friend...I can say without hesitation the Most Valuable Teacher (MVT) I had was Mr. Walton. For me, his classroom was a football field, but the subject was LIFE. He has prepared and developed his players/students based on life concepts such as teamwork, discipline, and integrity...These valuable concepts we use everyday in our personal and work lives."
