There's no one way to learn. Therefore, there should never be just one way to teach. While some children
learn best with their eyes, others learn best with their ears. Still others learn best when they're moving,
acting, and participating. At Hawken, we look at the individual child and help them to discover their particular learning style,
making sure that each child is engaged in rigorous and effective activities.
It's amazing what a student can accomplish when given the freedom. At Hawken, students are free -- to think
for themselves, to explore their interests, to pursue their talents. Our teachers, in collaboration with
colleagues and administrators, are free to create and shape their curricula in order to enhance their students'
learning abilities. It's a freedom that is invigorating, appropriate, and that says to both student and teacher,
"We trust you." Yes, we do things differently here -- more flexibly, more creatively, more passionately. It's
why our students are so engaged. It's why they're so responsible. It's why they soar to such great heights.
Lower School
Hawken's Lower School offers a rich and varied program emphasizing the many facets of a child's development.
Teachers build a classroom experience that is truly child-centered -- reflecting children's interests, engaging
their active inquiry, and allowing them to take ownership for their learning and work.

between student and teacher. We pride ourselves on maintaining small class sizes and reasonable class loads for
our teachers.

Upper School
In the Upper School, we strive for a balance between the individual needs and interests of our students, and the
traditional ideals of a liberal arts, college preparatory education. While required to take fundamental courses,
students also pursue a wide range of electives to enrich their education.
