For Hawken, the Gries Center at University Circle (UC) represents endless possibilities for students and faculty to explore experiential and service learning opportunities.

The decision to establish a physical presence in University Circle emerged from Hawken's recent strategic planning process. Such a campus will bring to life two of our newly named Strategic Plan Principles:

"We believe students find energy and passion through engagement, and we expect them to participate and contribute meaningfully in an array of activities outside of the classroom," and

"We believe students need authentic experience in the real world to make meaning from knowledge. We consider nature, Cleveland and the global community to be extensions of our classrooms."

The vision is to connect students to some of the greatest cultural organizations, research laboratories and hospitals in the world for unique collaborations that will engage students in hands-on learning.

The campus will help students gain deeper perspective into the diversity of our world by understanding the people in our community, as well as the opportunities and challenges of our region. The service and experiential learning opportunities will uphold Hawken's purpose of providing "forward-focused preparation for the real world through the development of character and intellect." Learn more about Hawken's Purpose, Promise and Principles.

In the coming months, Hawken will be engaging its faculty and many community partners to define the ways it will enhance the Hawken experience through the Gries Center at University Circle.

All community members are welcome to attend a special evening meeting of the Parents' Association on Monday, December 10, at 7 p.m. in the Lyndhurst Chapel to learn more about the Gries Center at University Circle. Community meetings also will be scheduled in the future to address questions about the campus.

Community Support for The Gries Center
at University Circle

Hawken has secured a lead gift from a prominent alumnus, Bob Gries '44, and his wife Sally, a Hawken Life Trustee.

"Hawken has always impressed us with its ability to improve, adapt and evolve to educate students and help them grow into caring and capable leaders," said Bob Gries. "We feel very passionate about Hawken's presence in University Circle and the wonderful service and learning opportunities it will generate."

Through the years Bob and Sally have been seminal supporters of community service programming at Hawken. Given their longtime support, the Hawken Board of Trustees has decided to name the new campus the Hawken School Sally and Bob Gries Center at University Circle.

Hawken will continue to seek philanthropic support to renovate the campus into a thriving learning center. If you would like to find out more about how you can give to the Gries Center at University Circle, contact Deb Hopkins at 440-423-2966 or dhopk@hawken.edu.

An exciting element of the Gries Center at University Circle is that it brings students back to where Hawken was founded. James A. Hawken established his school in 1915 at 1572 Ansel Road, just blocks from the extension campus. The original class included three teachers, including James Hawken and 19 first through third graders (pictured at left).
