Tuition & Fees > Financial Assistance

HAWKEN SCHOOL is committed to providing educational access to qualified students, regardless of their financial situation, through a generous Financial Assistance Program. Each year, Hawken School distributes approximately 3 million dollars in need-based assistance to qualified students, primarily in the Middle and Upper Schools. The majority of financial assistance offered by Hawken is in the form of grants that do not need to be repaid. There are also Key Achiever Loans, for families who may only need minimal or short-term financial assistance.

HAWKEN'S COMMITMENT TO "FAIR PLAY" extends to the financial assistance program. Hawken School offers need-based financial assistance grants established upon factual information and the financial analysis provided by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS). Intended as a supplement to a family's resources, rather than a replacement of those resources, financial assistance awards at Hawken are made not only to families who fall into a very low income bracket but also to middle-income families and those of more substantial means who may need only a minor grant to help meet the cost of schooling.

Every family, regardless of past awards, must complete a PFS statement annually, send signed copies of the previous year's tax returns with all included schedules and W-2's prior to the filing deadline, and submit a signed IRS form 4506, to the Admission Office. The Financial Assistance Committee will review an application for aid only when the Admission Committee has accepted a student to Hawken School and the Financial Assistance Application is complete. Requests for Financial Assistance completed after the filing deadline will be placed in a wait pool for aid, and will be considered if funds become available.

Process for applying for Financial Assistance:
1. Complete the Application for Admission (including student interview).
2. Submit the Preliminary Application For Financial Assistance to the Admission Office by January 10th.
3. Submit the PFS form (either by mail or online) to the SSS no later than January 25th; Applicants in grades 4-12 who complete both admission and financial assistance applications by the first round will receive provisional financial assistance grants with the admission decision.
4. Send a copy of 2006 IRS tax form 1040 and all schedules to the Office of Financial Assistance.
5. Send copies of all 2007 W-2's to the Hawken Office of Financial Assistance by February 1st. Detailed instructions on the Financial Assistance application process and the SSS application material will be sent once the Preliminary Request for Financial Assistance is submitted. Information is also available on www.hawken.edu.

THE HAWKEN SCHOOL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE COMMITTEE abides by the "Best Practices" established by the National Association of Independent Schools and the Cleveland Consortium of Independent Schools. When assessing a family's demonstrated need, Hawken School reserves the rights to request additional factual information that will enable us to make a fair assessment of a family's financial situation.

TO BEGIN THE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION, please submit the Preliminary Application for Financial Assistance to Hawken School as soon as the decision to apply for admission is made. Once we receive this form, you will receive the Parents Financial Statement and detailed instructions from Hawken. For families who wish to join Hawken's efforts in conservation, please consider filling out the PFS on-line at www.sss.org, and refer to the detailed timeline and procedures at www.hawken.edu. If you opt for this method, please indicate this on the bottom of the Preliminary Application for Financial Assistance.

Although Hawken's Financial Assistance budget is large, there are usually insufficient funds to meet the needs of all qualified applicants. Therefore, it is extremely important that applicants meet the filing deadlines—December 14, 2007, for current students and January 25, 2008, for new students.
